Fantasy football is a staple in many Americans’ lives during the fall and winter seasons when the NFL is being played. For somebody like me, I only watch football because of my league and not wanting to do a punishment at the end of the year, but for many, they like to win it. People go to great lengths to crunch the numbers and see what offensive systems and player combinations can get them the most weekly points and this has spread to other sports as well, such as hockey and basketball. Despite there being many reasons I could go into why the current fantasy league systems don’t work fairly as fantasy footballs do, that’s not what this is about. Without further ado, this is the history of the first ever fantasy football league. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The first ever fantasy football league was created in 1963 by Bill Winkerbatch where he and 7 other managers drafted their teams. but the rules and the idea were created by the part Raiders owner while on a three-game away trip on the East Coast. He got together with a Raiders sports writer and staffer to sketch out the rules and the points system, which only rewarded touchdowns. Ron Wolf was one of the 8 team managers who also asked his friend Andy Mousalimas to join the league who ended up making fantasy football as big as it is today. He opened up a bar on Piedmont Avenue in 1968 and created his own 6 divisions for patrons of the bar to join. he also made a change to the points system which improved the game drastically – counting yardage. This made good players on bad teams still a viable option for people to pick, and this is what makes the leagues grow as a person who gets the last pick can still get a decent player on a bad team who could win them points. this decision to create his own leagues and make yardage a point factor got him booted from the GOPPPL. But soon bars across the country were asking for the rules and scoring for his league to make leagues of their own.
